Private Architectural and Planning Consultant. 1986-88, Consultant Planning Inspector, DoE. 1970-86, Planning Architect for Central London, Greater London Council; 1965-70, Group Leader for Urban Design, London Borough of Lambeth; 1961-65, Project Architect, London County Council; pre-1961, architectural assistant in private and commercial practices. Private consultancy projects include: master plan for the 250 dwelling residential development of St. Lawrence’s Hospital Caterham; advising on proposed new settlement for 13,000 people near Ashford; and an environmental statement for the largest HAT scheme in the UK. Environmental impact and urban design studies of traffic and transport schemes for British Rail, London Transport, London Boroughs, and the Traffic Director for London. Architectural and planning consultant to private and commercial clients for studies and projects and expert evidence for appeals. Public sector projects include: Redevelopment of London Docklands, King’s Cross, and Piccadilly Circus (project manager); Tower of London Precinct improvement; London’s Canal Way Walk (originator); and the pedestrian network for Central London (originator). Leading witness at many major public inquiries in London.
Projects aboard in: Ethiopia, Europe, Russia, and China, mainly with the former British Executive Service Overseas - now Voluntary Services Overseas. Consultant to the Council of Europe – former editor of Revised European Urban Charter.
Author of over fifty publications on urban development, design, environment and planning for crime prevention. Frequent speaker at conferences, especially for the Council of Europe. British Council Anglo-Soviet award for planning research in Russia. Winston Churchill Fellow and RIBA Research Fellow studying transport interchanges in North America and Europe; results incorporated into doctoral thesis on location of offices at rail termini in Central London, and into the 1976 Greater London Development Plan. Lecturer up to post-graduate level in: architecture, planning and urban design.
Former member of RIBA Planning Advisory Group, and RIBA Urban Design Visiting Board to colleges. Currently Leader of the RTPI’s International Development Network. Member of Urban Design Group, Designing Out Crime Association, Salzburg Congress and Streets for People. Trustee of Queen’s Jubilee Walkway Trust.
